First- Before I begin, I would first like to thank you for visiting my site, especially after my 2-month break from posting. The end of the semester got really hectic for me with classes and I'm ready to start back frequently and even better than before! Let's Get to the Point- Last night as I was scrolling through Instagram, I saw a meme (a captioned picture) that read, "Mixed Girls with Curly Hair are Winning". Below, the man who posted the picture continued to say, "That's the only type that I like. Light skinned girls, they're the best!" I was immediately upset. That one, simple picture took me back to the time where I felt inferior, insecure, and ashamed to be a darker tone. As I reach 21 years old, I can confirm that every darker person of color has heard it. No matter what racial or ethnic background, we have heard, "You're pretty for a dark skinned girl." What pains me the most is the idea that long, curly hair equates to "good hair". For so long, I believed it. It wasn't until I was 18 years old that I realized that there is no such thing as "good" hair. I had to realize that every strand of hair on my head and every ounce of melanin in my skin is beautiful and worthy of appreciation. It wasn't until I was 20 years old that I realized that the reason that the fetishization of the mixed race woman upsets me is not because I am insecure, it is because the ignorance is out of hand and simply detrimental. It is detrimental to the darker toned girls who are just as beautiful. It is demeaning to the single raced girls who have no control over their genetics. It is destructive to the minds of mixed race girls who may start to think that they have an advantage over other women. Lastly, it is offensive towards the women who are questioned of whether they are mixed or not simply because they have a darker tone or straighter hair. This post is not to shame men. This post is not to show dislike towards mixed race women. I am also not implying that being attracted towards mixed race women is unacceptable. However, I am promoting the idea that having a preference is normal, but discriminating is not. Choosing a woman solely on her appearance is the wrong way to pick a partner, and the wrong way to start a relationship. Love every woman from the lightness to the darkness of their skin, the kinks, curls, or straight parts of their hair, the bones and/or curves of their body, and the wonderful things they have to offer to your life. To the darker toned and/or straight-haired woman reading this, you are beautiful. You are valuable. Please don't ever think otherwise. Thanks for reading! Read or Weep, Alexis Jade
